Jónas Sen is an Icelandic composer, pianist, music arranger, and teacher who holds two master’s degrees: an MA in Music Performance Studies from City University of London and an MA in Arts Management from the University of Bifröst. He further honed his piano skills under the tutelage of Monique Deschaussées in Paris and Carola Grindea in London.

From 2007 to 2008, Jónas was the keyboard player in Björk’s band during her world tours, later joining her as a guest performer in several Biophilia shows in 2011 and 2013. Together, they arranged all the Biophilia songs for keyboard instruments (featured on the iPad and iPhone versions of Biophilia) and collaborated on numerous transcriptions and arrangements of Björk’s other works.

He has composed music for some of Gabríela Friðriksdóttir’s videos and co-created music for various dance productions—most notably Kris Verdonck’s H, an Incident, which toured Europe in 2013. Jónas also created and hosted numerous TV programs about music in Iceland, including Tíu fingur (2006), highlighting Icelandic instrumentalists, and Átta raddir (2011), featuring Icelandic singers. His series Tónspor profiled composers and choreographers, in collaboration with the Reykjavik Arts Festival and the Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation. Recently, he produced and hosted a show exploring the musical culture of Icelandic schoolchildren.

In 2017, Jónas published a biography of the noted Icelandic pianist and mystic Halldór Haraldsson. He has also set mystical poems by St. John of the Cross and St. Therese of Lisieux to music, performed regularly during Mass by the Carmelite nuns in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland.

A highlight of Jónas’s performance career was his appearance at the Winnipeg New Music Festival, where he performed Philip Glass’s complete Etudes alongside Glass himself and pianists Vicky Chow, Jenny Lin, and Madeline Hildebrand.
